Organizational Overview

 

OVERVIEW & PURPOSE

Whitney High School Black Alumni Association is dedicated to enhancing the connection between Black students past, present, and future. We work to create a collective unit that fosters a sense of community and instills in its students a lifelong commitment to representation at WHS. WHSBAA is committed to help create a culture of equity and inclusion, for all students - specifically the Black students, who are the micro-minority population. By encouraging the partnership and collaboration of Black alumni and current Black students and parents, our hope is to create programs and initiatives that inspire a positive culture of change and understanding for all students. 

CO-CHAIRMAN

Mrs. Nicole Houston & Mrs. Jennifer Booker

  1. Oversees and presides over all WHSBAA meetings.

  2. Oversees the creation of the annual event calendar.

  3. Advocates for WHSBAA engagement in WHS programming.

  4. Serves on WHS Foundation Task Force.

COMMUNITY RELATIONS &
PARENT ENGAGEMENT LIAISON 

Mrs. Megan Mitchell

  1. Fosters an open and transparent partnership with the students and parents on behalf of WHSBAA.

  2. Acts as the liaison between YBS, WHS Black Parent Association, and WHSBAA.

  3. Works to increase student and alumni awareness of WHSBAA; fosters engagement on social media, supports Marketing & Social Media Chair to create a marketing strategy for WHSBAA, and promotes events and programs sponsored by WHSBAA and YBS.

  4. Works with ABCUSD partners, community partners, and Cerritos City Council to ensure that the YBS, BPA, and WHSBAA agenda is being supported on a districtwide level.

PUBLIC RELATIONS 

Mrs. Fetle Negash-Barnes

  1. Works to increase student and alumni awareness of WHSBAA; fosters engagement, and creates a marketing strategy for WHSBAA.

  2. Promotes events and programs sponsored by Young Black Scholars and the WHSBAA.

  3. Acts as the Public Relations spokesperson on behalf of WHSBAA.

MARKETING AND SOCIAL MEDIA
CO-CHAIRS

Ms. Eryn Burnett & Ms. Yasmine Diara

  1. Work to increase student and alumni awareness of WHSBAA; foster engagement on social media, and create/organize social media campaigns on behalf of WHSBAA.

  2. Help support and promote events and programs sponsored by Young Black Scholars and the WHSBAA. Expected to have an active presence on social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter).

  3. Update WHSBAA website.

RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION CHAIR

Mr. Khalif Boyd & Ms. Adrienne Ford

Coordinates the transition of YBS to WHSBAA.

  1. Fosters engagement of new members and works to retain current members.

  2. Responsible for all recruitment and retention efforts, including coordinating YBS/WHSBAA meetups.

  3. Coordinates a committee as needed to implement activities.

MENTORSHIP PROGRAM CO-CHAIR 

Mr. Gary Polk & Mrs. Lasondra Wilson

The Mentoring Program Chair directs the mentoring component of WHSBAA in conjunction with YBS.

  1. Works with the other Mentoring Committee volunteers.

  2. Oversees mentors and training of mentors.

  3. Organizes and creates quality opportunities for mentorship and partner building between community partners, WHSBAA, YBS, and BPA.

    1. Will work in tandem with LaMonica Bryson (advisor of YBS).

TREASURER 

Ms. Ashley Gammage

Serves as financial manager of WHSBAA.

  1. Assists in preparation of all WHSBAA budgets.

  2. Helps manage WHSBAA's bank account.

  3. Deposits money from events and fundraisers.

  4. Makes withdrawal for bills, scholarship payments, etc.

  5. Receives and processes receipts from WHSBAA events.

SECRETARY

Mrs. Kiyana Turner

Serves as secretary of WHSBAA.

  1. Active participation in all WHSBAA meetings.

    1. Meetings include e-board and general body.

  2. Serves as archivist of WHSBAA.

    1. Record and distribute minutes and activity report to WHSBAA e-board and general body members.

    2. Record significant milestones for WHSBAA’s history.

  3. Responsible for WHSBAA communication, within organization.

  4. Responsible for official documentation in conjunction with all e-board members and general body members.

GENERAL BODY MEMBERS  

The General Body shall comprise of all members of the WHSBAA.

  1. The General Body shall meet in the form of an Annual General Meeting,

  2. The presence of at least 1/5th (one-fifth) of the total members of WHSBAA must be present in order to meet quorum. If there is no quorum for 30 minutes from the scheduled start time of the meeting, the meeting shall be reconvened at a later time.

  3. Quorum is required to vote on decisions that affect the WHSBAA as a collective entity.

  4. Any member of BPA (Black Parent Association) and YBS (Young Black Scholars) may attend General Body meetings. However, only WHSBAA members may be counted for quorum.

  5. General Body Members must be in attendance for the consideration and approval of the budget and any financial decisions (such as fundraising and donations) for WHSBAA.
